Custom ABS Electronic Enclosure: Low-Volume Injection Molding for 500-Set Orders

Need a supplier for a custom ABS electronic enclosure that must fit other plastic and metal components? YS Rapid supports the whole build: vacuum-cast prototypes, fit and appearance reviews, low-volume injection mold fabrication, ABS molding, painting, screen printing and assembly. This project moved from five prototype sets through two sampling rounds to repeat orders of approximately 500 sets. The tooling approach matched the customer's limited equipment demand.

The pictured yellow enclosure frame has a large central opening and several mounting and locating features around its inner edge. Those details matter because the housing is part of an assembly. A supplier quote based only on the outside shape would miss the fit requirements that determine whether the equipment can be assembled reliably.

Why the customer tested assembled sets first

A painted prototype may look acceptable on its own but still cause trouble when fasteners, mating plastic parts and metal components are added. In the first stage, we produced five vacuum-cast sets from the customer's design and coordinated the specified paint and screen printing. The parts were then evaluated as an assembly.

Two sample rounds gave the development team a chance to review both appearance and fit before approving the injection mold. For the frame shown here, the key questions concerned the central opening, mounting-hole alignment, locating features and interfaces with neighbouring parts. The exact critical dimensions come from the customer's drawings and assembly requirements; they cannot be determined from the photo.

This prototype work established a practical reference for the molded product. It also helped identify design changes while they could still be made without modifying a completed mold.

Moving an ABS enclosure from vacuum casting to injection molding

A vacuum-cast part and an injection-molded ABS part are made by different processes. The approved prototypes therefore informed the design, but did not replace DFM or first-article checks. Before mold manufacture, the design review considers draft, wall thickness transitions, material shrinkage, gate position, parting line and the treatment of visible surfaces. Mounting features and mating edges receive particular attention because they affect final assembly.

We then use the approved CAD and drawing requirements to define the mold and inspection plan. First molded samples are checked against those requirements and trial-assembled with the other plastic and metal parts. Appearance and print placement can be compared with agreed references before a production batch is released.

Choosing soft tooling for repeat 500-set batches

With orders of around 500 sets and modest equipment demand, a non-hardened injection mold suited the program better than a hardened high-volume tool. Buyers may describe this route as soft tooling, low-volume injection molding or, where it bridges development and ongoing supply, bridge tooling. The tool must still be designed for the expected total number of orders, the enclosure geometry and the desired finish.

The material of the mold, cavity count and expected tool life are determined during the tooling review. A 500-set order alone does not establish any of those specifications. Discussing the forecast early lets engineering and procurement compare the up-front tool investment with the expected unit cost and the possibility of later design revisions.

What a buyer should ask the supplier to quote

For a useful comparison between enclosure manufacturers, ask for a proposal that separates the mold from the parts and states what is included in finishing and assembly. Confirm how samples will be approved, which features require inspection, and how repeat orders will be handled. If other plastic or CNC-machined metal parts are needed for the device, include them in the assembly review so each supplier is quoting the same scope.

To request a quote from YS Rapid, send the 3D CAD files, 2D drawings, assembly views or mating-part models, ABS material requirements, colour and artwork specifications, expected quantity per order and projected lifetime demand. Tell us which dimensions control fit and whether painted and screen-printed parts need to be delivered as an assembled set. We can review the design and propose a prototype, tooling and low-volume production plan based on those requirements.
