PC/ABS Electronic Housing Trial Production: 500 Injection-Moulded Parts from Prototype Tooling

The decision after the prototype

The electronic equipment housing had passed its initial prototype stage. The next question was whether the design could be built consistently as an injection-moulded part and supplied in enough quantity for a trial assembly run. The customer needed 500 PC/ABS components, but did not need the mould shipped to Europe. YS Rapid therefore arranged prototype tooling, mould trials and a small production batch, while retaining the tool for agreed future orders.

This is the point where product development and procurement need the same answer: do the parts fit the assembly, and is there a workable supply route if the build proceeds? The 500-piece order provides actual moulded housings for that decision without requiring the customer to arrange its own tooling transfer or moulding supplier.

Why this housing needs an assembly-led tool review

The image shows a broad base with several recessed compartments, vertical walls, fastening points and projecting sections. These are functional features, not simply external styling. Their positions and clearances can determine whether mating components seat properly and whether the housing can be fastened during assembly. The photograph does not establish which electronic devices go into each compartment; those interfaces must be identified from the customer's CAD data and assembly information.

For this design, the tool review starts with the locations that matter to the build. We examine how the mould will form the recesses and upright features, where the parting line and gate can sit, and how the housing will be ejected without damaging sensitive edges. Broad areas and changes in wall section are considered for shrinkage or distortion. Any proposed changes to a fastening or mating feature are presented for approval before tool manufacture.

PC/ABS offers a useful combination of toughness and processability for many electronic housings. The exact grade, colour and any fire-performance requirement must be specified for this application; a PC/ABS label alone does not establish a particular rating.

An approval sequence built around the 500-piece assembly

1. Confirm the interfaces. We use the 3D model, 2D drawing and, where available, mating parts to identify the dimensions and surfaces that govern location, fastening and closure. This gives the mould trial a clear set of checks rather than a generic visual approval.

2. Make and trial the prototype mould. Initial shots are examined for complete filling, flash, sink, distortion and clean release. The relevant interfaces are measured against the agreed drawing. Where mating components are supplied, trial fit can reveal an issue that isolated dimensions may miss.

3. Resolve findings before the batch. If a sample needs adjustment, we distinguish process tuning from a tool correction or a design change. The customer approves changes that affect the defined part before the 500-piece run begins.

4. Mould and release the batch. Once samples are approved, we produce the trial quantity and check agreed critical features and appearance against the approved reference. The customer receives components ready for its own small-batch assembly evaluation.

A trial run may expose questions about assembly sequence, access to fasteners or the way components locate inside the housing. Recording those findings against a physical moulded batch gives the development team a firmer basis for its next design or purchasing decision.

Tooling stays in place for the next order

The prototype mould is not included in the shipment. Retaining it at YS Rapid lets us quote and schedule subsequent moulding batches using the established tool, subject to its condition and any approved revisions. It also gives procurement one point of contact for mould maintenance, PC/ABS sourcing, moulding and part inspection.

Prototype tooling should still be specified against the expected number of parts and the features it must reproduce. Before an order is placed, the quotation can define the mould construction, expected service life, ownership, storage terms and how future engineering changes will be handled. These details help both teams compare the initial investment with their likely demand.

Low-volume injection moulding for product development teams

YS Rapid provides prototype mould tooling and low-volume plastic injection moulding for custom housings that have moved beyond single prototype samples. This project illustrates a practical route to 500 repeatable PC/ABS components for an assembly build, with the mould kept at the manufacturing site for potential repeat supply.

To assess a similar housing, send us the 3D CAD model, dimensioned drawing, intended PC/ABS grade or performance requirements, target quantity and any mating parts or assembly drawing. We will review the tooling approach, identify the features that need approval at mould trial, and prepare a quotation for the tool and moulded batch.
