Vacuum casting reproduces the surface of the master pattern, including imperfections. For this part, we carefully sanded the curved face and edge transitions before using controlled abrasive blasting to create the requested fine texture. We checked the visible surfaces before making the silicone molds so sanding marks or uneven texture would not be repeated throughout the batch.
The project image places the finished black trim piece beside its corresponding silicone mold cavity. It illustrates a key point for cosmetic prototypes: the mold can reproduce a good surface, but it cannot correct a poorly prepared master.
This finish is a fine blasted texture. Projects requiring a specific automotive grain should provide an approved texture reference so the required appearance can be evaluated before molding.
The customer needed enough physical pieces for multiple development reviews and trial assemblies. Vacuum casting allowed the team to produce a small batch from a common master while carrying its curved profile and surface finish into the cast parts. It also avoided committing to production tooling while the design was still being evaluated.
We reviewed the supplied CAD, identified the visible face and fit-relevant features, then prepared the master and silicone tooling. After casting, we checked the parts against the agreed appearance and dimensional requirements. For similar projects, marking critical mating areas on the drawing helps us focus inspection on the features that matter to the planned assembly tests.
ABS-like casting resin can be appropriate for appearance and fit evaluations, but it should not be treated as identical to a specified injection-molding ABS grade. If prototypes will be used for heat, impact, flammability or other performance tests, we review the test conditions before recommending a material.
YS Rapid supports product development companies, design firms, manufacturers and subcontractors around the world. We can assist with DFM review, prototype master preparation, vacuum casting, finishing and coordination of related components for assembly. This gives development teams a practical way to obtain more than one display sample without losing sight of fit and finish.
A current CAD revision, a clear surface reference and identified critical dimensions help projects move smoothly across teams and locations. When the design is validated or demand increases, we can review the next suitable manufacturing process and support the transition to larger quantities.
