Carbon Steel Sheet Metal Enclosure Prototype for Automation Equipment

A sheet metal enclosure may look straightforward, but its openings, mounting studs and folded edges determine whether the internal components can be assembled correctly. For this automation equipment project, the customer ordered 20 carbon steel enclosures for prototype assembly and system verification.

Each enclosure required laser cutting, precision bending, press-fit stud installation and welding. After fabrication, the surfaces were polished and spray painted before the finished parts were shipped to Italy.

A Functional Chassis for Equipment Testing

This part functions as both an external enclosure and an internal mounting platform. Its rectangular access window provides clearance for a display, control module or other electronic assembly, while the long ventilation opening supports airflow around heat-generating components.

Several holes and raised threaded studs are distributed across the main panel. Their positions must match the customer’s internal brackets, circuit boards and other installed parts. The folded side walls also contribute to the overall rigidity of the enclosure.

For a prototype project like this, appearance is important, but assembly accuracy comes first. A misplaced stud, distorted panel or incorrect flange height could prevent the equipment from fitting together during testing.

Manufacturing Sequence Planned Around the Assembly Features

Before fabrication, we reviewed the customer’s 3D model and 2D drawings together. The review focused on the relationships between the enclosure and the components that would be mounted inside it.

The flat sheet was cut by laser to create the outer profile, access opening, ventilation slots and mounting holes. Cut edges were deburred before forming to prevent sharp edges from affecting subsequent operations.

Bending was completed according to a planned sequence. This was necessary because the side flanges, large openings and nearby holes could influence panel flatness. Bend allowance and forming direction were checked on the first part before the complete batch was produced.

Controlling Stud Position and Welding Distortion

The enclosure contains multiple threaded mounting points. Press-fit studs provide permanent fastening locations without requiring loose nuts during final assembly. However, their position and perpendicularity need to remain stable after installation.

Studs were inserted only after the main bending dimensions had been confirmed. We checked their spacing against the drawing and protected the threads during the remaining production steps.

Welding was required in selected areas to complete or reinforce the structure. Carbon steel panels can distort if too much heat is concentrated in one location. To limit deformation, the parts were held in position during welding and the weld sequence was controlled. The enclosure was then checked for flatness before surface finishing.

Preparing the Enclosure for Spray Painting

Weld marks, sharp edges and local surface irregularities were removed through grinding and polishing. Particular attention was given to the visible top panel, folded corners and areas around the openings.

The parts were then cleaned and spray painted to the specified color. The coating provided a more representative appearance for equipment evaluation while also protecting the carbon steel surface.

Inspection covered the features that could influence the customer’s next assembly stage:

· Overall length, width and flange height

· Bend angles and panel flatness

· Access-window and ventilation-slot locations

· Hole spacing and stud positions

· Thread condition after painting

· Welded areas and joint stability

· Paint coverage and visible surface quality

The finished enclosures were packed carefully to reduce the risk of scratches or edge damage during international transportation.

Sheet Metal Prototyping for Automation Equipment

YS RAPID supports engineers who need physical sheet metal parts before a design is released for production. We manufacture custom enclosures, chassis, brackets, panels and structural covers from customer drawings.

Available processes include laser cutting, sheet metal bending, press-fit fastener installation, welding, grinding, polishing, powder coating and spray painting. By coordinating these operations within one project, we help customers avoid managing separate suppliers for fabrication and finishing.

Our sheet metal prototype service is suitable for:

· Automation and control equipment

· Electronic devices and instrument housings

· Laboratory and testing systems

· Industrial machinery

· New-product assembly trials

· Low-volume equipment builds

Quantities can range from individual prototypes to small production batches. Parts can be supplied as separate components or delivered with related brackets and hardware prepared for assembly.

Build and Test Your Sheet Metal Design

A prototype enclosure allows your engineering team to check component mounting, access clearances, ventilation, cable routing and external appearance using a physical part.

Send YS RAPID your 3D files, 2D drawings, material specification, quantity and finishing requirements. We can review the sheet metal design, identify potential fabrication issues and provide a quotation for prototype or low-volume production.
