Custom Sheet Metal Equipment Enclosure

This custom sheet metal equipment enclosure was manufactured from cold-rolled steel for an equipment project in the United States. The customer ordered 15 units for assembly and product verification before moving to a larger production stage.

The enclosure combines ventilation holes, mounting features, a large front opening and multiple formed panels. YS RAPID provided low-volume sheet metal fabrication with attention to bend accuracy, panel flatness and the installation space inside the housing.

A Functional Housing for Equipment Assembly

The enclosure is designed to protect and support components installed inside the equipment. Its open front provides access during assembly and maintenance, while the perforated upper and lower panels allow air to circulate around internal components.

Several groups of ventilation holes are distributed across the enclosure. Producing these features requires more than simply cutting the correct pattern. Closely spaced holes remove material from the sheet and can reduce local stiffness, increasing the risk of panel distortion.

The large front opening presents a similar challenge. It provides useful installation access but also makes the structure less rigid during forming. The cutting layout, bending sequence and handling method must therefore be planned together.

Sheet Metal Fabrication Considerations

This cold-rolled steel enclosure includes multiple bends that determine its final width, depth and internal clearance. Even a small variation in each bend can accumulate across the finished housing.

Before fabrication, we reviewed the customer’s drawings to confirm:

· Bend directions and inside radii

· Hole-to-bend distances

· Ventilation-hole distribution

· Mounting-hole positions

· Front-opening dimensions

· Internal component clearance

· Access for bending tools

The parts were processed in a controlled sequence to reduce interference between formed sections. After bending, the enclosure was checked as a complete structure rather than inspecting each panel separately.

Controlling Alignment and Flatness

For an equipment housing, dimensional inspection must reflect how the part will be used. A mounting hole may meet its drawing tolerance but still cause an assembly problem if the adjacent flange is angled incorrectly.

Our inspection focused on the overall dimensions, front-opening geometry, bend angles, flange locations and hole alignment. Areas containing dense ventilation holes were also checked for visible distortion.

All cut edges and openings were deburred to remove sharp edges that could interfere with wiring, component installation or manual assembly.

Why Use Cold-Rolled Steel for an Enclosure?

Cold-rolled steel is widely used for custom equipment housings because it offers good strength, formability and dimensional consistency. It can be cut and bent into rigid structures while supporting detailed features such as ventilation holes, access openings and fastener locations.

The material is suitable for many secondary finishes, including powder coating, painting and zinc plating. The appropriate finish can be selected according to the required appearance, operating environment and corrosion resistance.

Low-Volume Sheet Metal Production

The quantity of 15 units was suitable for an initial equipment build. At this stage, the customer could evaluate the enclosure with the actual internal components without investing in high-volume tooling.

Low-volume sheet metal fabrication gives engineers an opportunity to check:

· Component fit and installation clearance

· Mounting-hole alignment

· Cable and connector access

· Airflow around internal parts

· Structural rigidity

· Ease of equipment assembly

If testing identifies a design issue, the sheet metal files can be revised before the next production batch.

Custom Sheet Metal Fabrication at YS RAPID

YS RAPID supports prototype and low-volume sheet metal parts for electronic devices, industrial equipment, automation systems and new product development.

Our sheet metal fabrication services include laser cutting, punching, bending, welding, PEM fastener installation, deburring, surface finishing and assembly checking. We can manufacture parts from 3D models, 2D drawings, flat patterns and assembly files.

For equipment enclosure projects, supplying the mating-part drawings or assembly model allows us to review hole alignment and internal clearance before production.
