The cover protects internal electronic components from accidental contact while allowing heat to escape through the upper ventilation slots.
Folded side walls increase the rigidity of the part and create mounting surfaces for connection to the equipment chassis. The notches and holes around the edges provide positioning and fastening points.
Because these features interact with the surrounding assembly, the cover must be evaluated as a functional component rather than only as a painted metal panel. Its overall width, bend angles and mounting positions determine whether it can be installed without interference.
The closely spaced slots remove material from the top panel and reduce its rigidity. Heat generated during laser cutting can also cause local distortion if the cutting sequence is not properly controlled.
For this sheet metal prototype project, the cutting path was arranged to limit concentrated heat around the slots. The edges were deburred after cutting, and the panel was checked for visible deformation before bending.
Maintaining a flat upper surface was important for two reasons: it supported accurate assembly and provided a better foundation for the final painted finish.
Bending transforms the flat steel sheet into the finished protective cover. Material thickness, bend radius and bend allowance all affect the final dimensions.
Small variations between the two side walls could make the cover too narrow, too wide or difficult to position on the equipment frame. The locations of the mounting holes and notches also had to remain consistent after forming.
Inspection therefore focused on:
· Overall length, width and height
· Distance between the folded side walls
· Bend angles and flange positions
· Ventilation-slot dimensions
· Mounting-hole locations
· Alignment of the locating notches
· Flatness of the upper panel
These checks helped maintain assembly consistency across the complete 20-set batch.
The steel covers required spray painting to provide the specified appearance and protect the surface. Before painting, burrs and sharp edges were removed, and the parts were cleaned to support stable coating adhesion.
Paint thickness was considered around mounting holes, ventilation slots and mating areas. Excessive coating buildup in these locations could reduce clearance or make installation more difficult.
After painting, each cover was checked for consistent color and texture, complete edge coverage, visible scratches, paint runs, dust marks and exposed steel. Mounting features were also inspected to ensure they remained usable after coating.
A single prototype can confirm the basic shape, but a 20-set batch gives the engineering team more useful information about process repeatability and assembly consistency.
The customer could use these covers to evaluate:
· Fit with multiple equipment assemblies
· Clearance around internal components
· Ventilation and heat dissipation
· Stability of the mounting structure
· Consistency between finished parts
· Painted color and overall appearance
If testing revealed a design issue, the flat pattern or bend dimensions could still be updated without investing in production tooling.
YS RAPID manufactures custom sheet metal prototypes and low-volume parts for electronic equipment, automation systems, medical devices and other product-development projects.
Our capabilities include laser cutting, bending, welding, riveting, press-fastener installation, grinding, spray painting and assembly inspection. We can produce protective covers, electronic enclosures, chassis panels, brackets and internal support structures from customer drawings.
For projects involving multiple manufacturing processes, we can also coordinate CNC-machined plastic housings, aluminum parts, turned components and silicone parts. This allows customers to source and test a more complete prototype assembly through one project team.
