Although the bracket is manufactured from a single sheet, its geometry includes several functional features.
The large base provides the main supporting surface. Elongated slots allow limited adjustment during equipment assembly, while round holes are used for locating or fastening. The embossed areas improve local rigidity and provide clearance for internal components. Multiple bent tabs connect the bracket to the surrounding enclosure or frame.
These features must align correctly after forming. A small deviation in bend position or flange angle may cause interference with the housing, screws or electronic components during assembly.
For this reason, the part was treated as a functional sheet metal prototype rather than only a cosmetic sample.
The customer needed a small batch for product verification, so full production tooling was not necessary at this stage. YS RAPID reviewed the 3D model and 2D drawing to evaluate the material thickness, bend sequence, hole locations and formed features.
The fabrication process included:
1. Cutting the flat sheet profile
2. Producing holes and elongated mounting slots
3. Forming the embossed reinforcement areas
4. Bending the side flanges and mounting tabs
5. Checking the finished geometry before coating
6. Applying the specified powder-coated finish
Planning the correct operation sequence was important. Some bends could restrict access to nearby features if completed too early. The forming and bending steps therefore had to be arranged around the actual part geometry.
For an electronic equipment bracket, successful assembly depends on the relationship between multiple features rather than one individual dimension.
Inspection focused on:
· Hole and slot positions
· Bend angles and flange heights
· Orientation of the mounting tabs
· Flatness of the main supporting surface
· Position of the embossed features
· Clearance around fastening areas
· Overall fit with the mating components
This helps reduce the risk of misalignment when the customer installs the brackets into the test equipment.
After the sheet metal fabrication was completed, the steel parts were cleaned and powder coated.
Powder coating provides a durable protective layer and gives the brackets a uniform finish suitable for use inside electronic equipment. Coating control is also important around holes, slots and mating surfaces. Excessive coating buildup may affect screw installation or reduce assembly clearance.
Critical contact areas can be masked when required by the drawing or assembly conditions.
