The product consisted of a front frame with a large display opening and a matching rear panel. Its structure was relatively straightforward, but the customer required only 20 units. Building an injection mold would have increased both the initial cost and lead time.
CNC machining allowed the PC parts to be produced directly from the customer’s CAD data. It was a practical solution for checking:
· Overall enclosure dimensions
· Display opening and mounting positions
· Fit between the front and rear components
· Edge profiles and external appearance
· Painting color and screen-printed graphics
If the customer needs to revise the design after the exhibition, the 3D model can be updated before the next prototype run or production tooling stage.
The main challenge was not the CNC machining complexity. It was achieving a clean and consistent painted finish across all 20 samples.
Machined PC surfaces may show cutter marks, edge lines or minor handling scratches. These imperfections can remain visible after painting if surface preparation is insufficient. Because the parts were intended for public display, our team paid particular attention to the wide flat areas, rounded edges and the inner frame around the screen opening.
After CNC machining, the parts were deburred, sanded and prepared for painting. The coating was applied according to the customer’s specified color requirements.
The finished samples were checked for:
· Visible machining or sanding marks
· Scratches, dust particles and paint runs
· Uneven color or coating thickness
· Rough edges around the display opening
· Screen-printing position and clarity
· Fit between mating enclosure components
· Cosmetic consistency across the full batch
Painting gives a plastic rapid prototype a more production-like appearance, but it must be considered together with the part geometry and assembly requirements.
Paint buildup around openings, locating features or mating edges may affect fit. We therefore reviewed the critical interfaces before finishing and checked the components again after the coating had cured.
Screen printing was completed according to the 2D drawing. The graphic position, orientation and appearance were inspected before packing. This helped ensure that the 20 prototypes looked consistent when presented together at the exhibition.
YS Rapid supports product developers who need more than unfinished CNC parts. We can coordinate machining, cosmetic finishing and trial assembly within one prototype project.
Our plastic rapid prototyping services include:
· Review of 3D models and 2D drawings
· DFM feedback before production
· CNC machining of PC, ABS, PMMA, POM, PA and other plastics
· Deburring, sanding and polishing
· Custom painting based on specified colors
· Screen printing and laser marking
· Fit checking and trial assembly
· Dimensional and cosmetic inspection
· Protective packing for international delivery
These services are suitable for electronic housings, display frames, control panels, handheld devices and other plastic components used for engineering evaluation, customer demonstrations and trade shows.
A successful exhibition prototype must represent the intended product clearly. Even when the structure is uncomplicated, inconsistent paint, visible surface marks or misaligned graphics can affect the overall impression.
YS Rapid provides plastic CNC prototyping and finishing support from CAD review to completed samples. Send us your 3D files, 2D drawings, quantity, material and surface requirements. We will evaluate the manufacturing details and prepare a suitable solution for your plastic rapid prototype project.
Upload your 3D and 2D drawings to us, and a quotation will be provided to you within 24 hours. Also our sales engineer will contact you directly regarding your rapid prototype and cnc machinery parts quote to ensure you have received the quotation and to answer your questions.
